Abstract by Jeppe Schjær Mogensen

Cucurbiturils and helicenes are two fascinating and distinct molecular structures with unique properties. In this dissertation, the synthesis and properties of these types of molecules are explored. Site-selective functionalization of proteins and peptides through an affinity-guided approach using the selective recognition of aromatic N-terminal amino acids by cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) is presented. Furthermore, acyclic cucurbiturils are investigated as solid-state sequestrants for organic micropollutants. Finally, the focus is shifted to helicenes, where benzofuran scaffolding is explored for the synthesis of progressively elongated helicenes with enhanced chiroptical properties.
