The role of reviewers and best practices regarding peer review – an editor’s view

Lecture held by Dr. Mohamed Amin, Associate professor, Beirut Arab University, Lebanon

Knowing how to make a critical assessment of research papers is of vital importance to budding researchers. By learning about the process, students learn how peer review works, how to avoid pitfalls in publishing and how to prepare and improve their own papers. This session will encourage PhD students and other junior researchers to reflect on how to consider the content of the manuscript: its originality and reasoning, structure, tone, and the soundness of the research. It will also provide more examples from the editor’s experience on exemplary reviews that truly benefit the scientific community. Other topics to be discussed will include publication ethics and how they relate to the peer review process (respecting the confidentiality of peer review, not taking advantage of inside information, and managing suspected plagiarism and redundant publications).
